The Night I Was Caught Watching Porn

Jessica Sutherland of The Establishment's Worst Night Ever podcast will make you cringe incredibly hard in this three-minute story about her mother catching her watching porn.

When Sutherland was 12 years old, she and her mother were staying at a truck stop motel. This motel catered to its truck stop clientele, and at around 7p.m. the TV would just start playing '70s porn. One night Sutherland was watching some documentary on PBS when it just morphed into porn: as Sutherland puts it, “full-on bush porn.”

She was fascinated. She started watching it every night she got the chance.

cringe worthy stories

One night Sutherland couldn’t sleep so she got up, moved the TV as far away from her mother’s bed as possible, turned the sound off and started watching the porn. Her mother woke up and asked, “What the fuck are you doing?”

Here’s where Jessica Sutherland’s story gets interesting. In the story I’ve constructed in my mind, her mother gets mad and tells her what she was watching was bad and shameful and says, "Just go to bed."

Instead, Sutherland’s mother told her that she wasn’t in trouble, but that they needed to talk about what she was watching. Her mother told her: “Just like the movies aren’t real to life, with other things you have to realize that that’s not real to life. When you’re ready to have sex, you deserve to be treated better than those women are and it’s not going to be like that.”

Now that’s a nice story; cringe, yes, but nothing that can’t be handled. Well, it didn’t end there.

Sutherland’s mother did such a good job of creating an open dialogue and making her daughter feel able to ask questions that Sutherland felt comfortable asking, “What’s the deal with butt sex? Cause the women seem like they like it but it really just kind of looks like pooping a really big poop backwards again and again but with force. So what’s up with that? It seems like it would hurt really bad.”

Sutherland’s mother looked off into the distance, licked her lips and said, “Not when it’s done right.”
