Uh-Oh: Embarrassing Your Child Online Could Land You in Court

An 18-year-old girl in Austria is suing her parents for posting embarrassing photos of her as a child on Facebook without her permission.

According to , a unnamed teenager in the southern Carinthia region off Austria has filed a lawsuit against her parents, claiming that since 2009, they have shared more than 500 photos of her on Facebook without her permission.

Photos that can be viewed by their 700 Facebook friends.

Photos, according to  including images of the girl being potty trained and having her diaper changed as a baby.

Photos that she says have made her life miserable.

Embarrassing? Yes. Make your life miserable, sue your parents embarrassing? I don't know. Sure, 500 photos sounds excessive, but a lawsuit? Really?

Lawyer Michael Rami says his client actually has a pretty strong case and has a good chance of winning in court.

“They knew no shame and no limit - and didn’t care whether it was a picture of me sitting on the toilet or lying naked in my cot - every stage was photographed and then made public,” the young woman said, according to The Local Austria. “I'm tired of not being taken seriously by my parents.”

Well it seems as though not even a lawsuit can get her parents to take her seriously. According to The Daily Mail, her parents are still refusing to take any of the photos down, with the teen's father planning to argue that since he took the photos, he has the right to publish them.

The case is due in court in November and according to Rami, if they can prove the photos violated his clients rights to a personal life, they will win.

If they are successful, her parents may end up compensating her for emotional distress as well as legal costs.

So parents, be careful what you post, because you never know how litigious your child will end up being.
